Punt Pass and Kick set Saturday

ELKINS – Local youngsters will have an opportunity to exhibit their football skills this Saturday at the Glendale Athletic Field in Elkins, when the NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick Competition kicks-off at 9:30 a.m.

Started locally in 2006, the event is hosted by Triplett & Triplett, L.C., Attorneys at Law and IDK Consulting Group, L.L.C. Boys and girls will be divided into five age group: 6,7; 8,9; 10,11; 12,13; 14,15. The competition is free to enter.

“The event has been around since the 1960’s,” event co-sponsor Jeff Triplett said. “It’s the longest running football skills competition for youth in America. It’s a great opportunity for youngsters to compete against kids their own age and show off their football skills. Kids have an opportunity, depending on how well they do, to move on to the national level and compete at a Steelers game.”

The competition allows youngsters to showcase their talents in punting, passing and kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy. Age classifications are as of Dec. 31 of the current year. Ribbons will be awarded to all first, second and third-place finishers in each division.

The top finisher from each of the eight age groups at the Elkins competition will advance to a sectional competition in Uniontown, Pa., in mid-October. The winners at the sectional competition will have their scores compared to other sectional champions, and could earn the right to compete during a Steelers game in November.

Parents will need to complete an entry form and release of liability waiver before their child will be permitted to participate. The form will be provided at the competition. Also, each participant must present a copy of their birth certificate or baptismal record as proof of their age. Participants should arrive no later than 9 a.m. to register.

Participants are asked to wear street shoes for the competition, but will be permitted to wear cleats on their non-kicking foot, in the event of wet conditions. A participant may only wear street shoes on his or her kicking foot.

The event will take place rain or shine. However, in the event of lightning, the event will be postponed to Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. For more information, call Triplett at 304-636-7335.
