Bucs down EMS Hornets 59-8

ELKINS – An explosive offense and a stingy defense were the keys to Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School’s victory Wednesday evening over Elkins Middle School. The Bucs beat the Hornets 59-8 at Wimer

Stadium.

“We’ve got work to do,” EMS coach Adam Roth said afterward. “It’s never as bad as you think it is. We can learn from this. At the middle school level, the name of the game is learning. We are going to identify our mistakes and correct them.”

The first half was all B-U, with the Bucs running up a 45-0 lead at halftime. Nathan Tolliver, Rondo Caesar and Austin McCartney were among those scoring touchdowns for the Bucs. The lone bright spot for the Hornets came in the third quarter when Thomas Talkington scored a touchdown. Daniel Romans also scored on a two-point

conversion.

“Once we were able to get past our issues with snapping the ball, we executed the plays well,” Roth said. “We had a nice reverse and found success on our counter plays. We suffered some bumps and bruises but we had some guys step up and contribute in those positions.”

The Hornets host Philippi on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Buckhannon-Upshur also returns to action Wednesday evening, playing host to Mountaineer at 7 p.m.
