GRAFTON — The Davis & Elkins College golf team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday, closing out the Wally Edgell West Virginia Division II Collegiate Invitational by leading from wire-to-wire.

The Senators opened up the tournament Monday with 297, putting the hosts four strokes ahead of Fairmont State. The two programs would tie for each of the next two rounds. D&E and Fairmont both shot 295 in the second round on Monday and improved to shoot a 287 on Tuesday.

Alistair Kyle led the way for the Senators, finishing in a tie for second overall in the tournament, with a +6 total of 216. Kyle finished one stroke behind Fairmont State’s Ben Knight for the win. Kyle did shoot the low round of the tournament with a 68 on Tuesday.

Kollin Hopwood had the lead for the Senators going into the final round, and closed out with a 74 to finish in a tie for fourth with a three-round total of 218, to go +8 for the event.

Jack Gibson was third for D&E and sixth overall with a +9 total of 219 for the event. Gibson improved by two strokes each round to close out with a 71 on the final day.

James Sutherland closed out the scoring for D&E and also grabbed a top 10 finish with a three-day total of 226 to finish at + 16 and in a tie for ninth overall.

Fraser Paul had the best round for the Senators after the opening 18 holes, shooting a pair of 80s to finish 16th overall at 231.

Ben Marshall and Dakota Sisk each shot three-day totals of 234 to finish in a tie for 21st overall in the 45-man field.

Alistair Cameron and Toby Gibbons rounded out the scoring for D&E in the tournament. The duo each shot totals of 236 to go +26 for the event. The duo tied for 24th overall.

The Senators will look to carry the momentum into next week’s tournament in Taswell. D&E will compete in the Bluefield State Invitational on Oct. 2.

Former West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams will be matching up on Monday and Tuesday at the Tygart Lake Golf Course where one team will be named winner of the Wally Edgell West Virginia Division II Championship.

Until a conference divide, 13 Division II West Virginia schools and two Pennsylvania schools, Seton Hill University and University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, competed together in one conference, the WVIAC. Today, these teams are now divided into two separate conferences, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference and the Mountain East Conference. Due to the dissolve of the WVIAC, a number of these teams no longer meet in conference play.

This week’s golf tournament, the Wally Edgell West Virginia Division II Championship, is named in honor of Wally Edgell, a former Davis and Elkins College head golf coach.

Davis and Elkins College head golf coach Ed Lothes said, “Wally was the coach at D&E back in 2010 through 2012, and he was one of the most successful golf coaches at D&E, so we thought we should name the tournament after him.”

The tournament is organized to bring golf teams in the state back together once a year to determine one state winner.
