Elkins cross country team takes first place at Buccaneer Invitational

BUCKHANNON — The Elkins High School boys cross country team cruised to a victory at the Buccaneer Invitational Tuesday at Buckhannon.

The girls cross country team raced to a second-place finish.

Leading the charge for the boys team was Dalton Hamrick, who placed first on the 5k course with a time of 18:15. Devan Ricottilli grabbed third in 18:53, while Brendan Wallace took fourth in 19:01, Mason Clark finished in fifth in 19:09, Read Schumacher placed seventh in 19:18, Sam Stephenson finished 10th in 19:46 and Jacob Lewis took 14th in 20:09.

Olivia Underwood won the girls race by a large margin, finishing in 20:45. Taylor Maynard stepped up to finish in ninth in 22:26, while Ellie Sizick finished close behind in 10th in 22:37. Kaeli Ricottilli ran well, finishing in 14th in 23:45, while Sophie Hummer broke the top 20 with a 19th-place finish in 24:49, Emily Chewning took 21st in 25:24 and Leanna High placed 29th in 28:12.

“It is always nice to win,” said EHS cross country head coach Shellie Burda. “It was nice to see Dalton have a strong race and Olivia continue to run well. The boys team really pushed each other for places tonight. They were as competitive with each other as well as the competition. The girls ran better overall than they did Saturday and continue to improve.”

Elkins took the boys team title with a score of 21, while Tucker County took second with 69. Lewis County was third with 78, followed by host Buckhannon-Upshur with 113, Liberty with 118 and Webster with 131.

Fairmont Senior took the girls team title with a score of 30, with Elkins taking second place with 48. Trinity was third with 86, followed by Liberty with 87 and Buckhannon-Upshur with 113.
