Elkins Middle rallies to defeat Tucker Valley

HAMBLETON — Elkins Middle School trailed Tucker Valley Middle by 6-0 at halftime Wednesday, but came storming back in the second half to earn a 30-6 road victory.

“We came out flat in the first half,” EMS coach Martin Kniley said. “We had a good halftime talk for both the offense and the defense. Our boys come out and really started playing. We scored 30 unanswered points. It was definitely a tale of two halves.”

Kniley said he was very proud of his young players.

“It’s a coach’s dream for them to respond like that in the second half,” he said. “They really worked hard to fix the problems we were having in the first half. I’m proud of them and my coaching staff, Eddie Gannon, Phil Isner and Doug Boggs.”

On offense for the Hornets, Trevor Smith gained 188 yards rushing. TJ Guire picked up 107 yards on the ground to go with 2 touchdowns, while Ben Boggs gained 63 yards and also scored a pair of TDs.

“Defensively we were very strong tonight,” Kniley said. “The man of the hour on that side of the ball was Tyler Ludwig, who had 4 tackles and really led our defensive line.”

During Wednesday’s game the Hornets recovered an onside kick and notched a fumble recovery.

The win puts EMS at 3-1 on the season. With the loss, Tucker Valley falls to 0-5.

The Hornets will host the Barbour County Middle football squad at 7 p.m. Sept. 5. Tucker Valley will have a bye week, then return to action Oct. 12, hosting Petersburg at 7 p.m.
