Elkins volleyball squad has busy week, falls to Lewis County

ELKINS — The Elkins High School volleyball squad lost a home match to Lewis County Thursday, finishing off a busy week for the team.

“We worked hard this week,” EHS volleyball coach Penny Crawford said. “The results weren’t always positive but the effort was there.”

The Lady Tigers were defeated by Lewis three sets to none, by scores of 21-25, 13-25 and 18-25.

The EHS varsity squad’s record now stands at 2-7.

The Elkins junior varsity squad defeated Lewis County’s JVs, however, in straight sets, 25-17 and 25-9.

The EHS JVs’ record improved to 7-4 on the season.

Earlier this week, Elkins went on the road to face East Fairmont on Tuesday evening.

The varsity squad was narrowly defeated 3-2 in a tough, five-set match. The scores were 16-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23 and 12-15.

“It was an exciting match,” Crawford said. “It was nip-and-tuck all the way through.”

The Elkins JVs won their match with East Fairmont, 2-1. The scores were 15-25, 25-19 and 25-23.

On Monday, the Lady Tigers JV squad took part in a rare quad-match at Philip Barbour High School, taking on three teams in a single day.

The Elkins JVs beat Preston County but lost to Philip Barbour and Buckhannon-Upshur on the day.

“It was a good experience for them,” Crawford said. “Six games were played during the day, with two games going on at one time. They really had to be alert and concentrate.”

Elkins will host Bridgeport at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
