BRIDGEPORT — The Elkins High School boys and girls cross country teams were successful in their bids to qualify for the state meet during regional action at Bridgeport Thursday in unseasonably warm weather.

Both EHS teams finished in the second-place spot at the regional meet.

Olivia Underwood sped to first place in the girls division and was named to the All-Region team.

Underwood took the lead from the beginning of the race and never let go. She ran the 5k course in 21:34.

Junior Taylor Maynard took the 12th position in 24:06, and Ellie Sizick was 14th in 24:11. Kaeli Ricottilli placed 21st in 25:21, while Sophie Hummer was 27th in 26:19, Emily Chewning was 34th in 27:28, and Jalyssa Reams was 42nd in 29:31.

On the boys side, Mason Clark led the EHS team with a seventh-place finish in 18:50, and Dalton Hamrick was ninth in 19:08. Both were named to the All-Region team.

Devan Ricottilli was 12th in 19:22, while Brendan Wallace was 14th in 19:25, Jacob Lewis was 16th in 19:48, Read Schumacher was 18th in 20:03, and Lucas Masten was 24th in 20:34.

“I am so proud of both teams for qualifying for the state meet,” said EHS headcoach Shellie Burda. “That has been our goal all season and it’s nice to see our athletes be able to achieve that. It was hard today because of the heat, but our athletes really gave it all they had. It is very exciting that Olivia, Mason and Dalton were able to get on the All-Region team.”

The boys race individual winner was Jimmy Lacaria from Bridgeport, who finished in 17:44.

Bridgeport, Elkins and Doddrige County will represent region II A/AA in both the girls and boys races next Saturday at Cabell Midland High School in the state meet.
