Hornets down RLB 16-6 on the road

WESTON — The Elkins Middle School Hornets won a tough road game Wednesday, downing Robert L. Bland 16-6.

“It was a hard-fought battle,” said EMS coach Martin Kniley. “They played hard and we played hard right back at them.”

The game was a defensive struggle for much of the night.

“We made a couple big mistakes,” Kniley said. “We had a touchdown called back. We fumbled on the 1-yard line.

“We talked to the boys at halftime, and they came out in the second half and went right down and scored a touchdown.”

The Hornets’ Trevor Smith had 178 yards rushing and scored both EMS touchdowns.

TJ Guire picked up 21 yards on the ground, while Ben Boggs had 18 yards rushing and gained 17 yards in receptions. DJ Mallow caught a 2-point conversion in the second half that finally put the game out of the Minutemen’s reach, Kniley said.

On defense for EMS, Boggs racked up 8 tackles on the night while Smith had 5 stops.

“Our defense played really well tonight,” Kniley said. “Lewis County wanted to pound the ball up the middle, and at the start they were making yards. We eventually called a timeout and got the boys in the right positions and they were able to shut that down.

“I’m proud of my boys,” the coach said. “They worked really hard.”

The Hornets are now 5-2 on the season. They will travel to face East Fairmont next Wednesday in their final game of the season.
