Lady Tigers drop title game in OT
CLARKSBURG — The Lady Tigers battled back from a 1-0 deficit against Liberty on Tuesday, but eventually fell, 2-1, in overtime in the Class AA/A Region II title game.
The Lady Mountaineers will now advance into the state playoff field of four teams.
“It was a great effort by our team tonight, the girls fought back and tied it up,” Elkins coach Scott Cutright said. “It was a true reflection of the tough way they have played all year.
“After losing seven starters from last season, and only losing 3 games while getting 6 ties this season is a very solid accomplishment.”
Elkins has won three out of four sectional title opportunities in as many years, with the previous two coming out of the AAA ranks, that had included Buckhannon-Upshur, Lewis County and Hampshire.
Sophomore Nonee High was credited with the Tigers’ second half goal that knotted the contest up at a level 1-1 score.
Elkins gained narrow margins with a 5-4 count in the shots on goal column, and a 2-1 tally in opportunities awarded from the corners. EHS sophomore Taylor Phillips notched 4 saves from the keeper’s place.
“Brooke Pomp and Megan Morral played very hard today and controlled the middle,” Cutright added. “Our seniors will definitely be missed. They and the whole team did a great job this year. The total team effort was very solid for us this year.”
The Lady Tigers finished the 2016 season with a winning record of 12 wins, 3 loses and 6 ties.
