Tygarts Valley falls to Clay-Battelle, 51-30

BLACKSVILLE –The Tygarts Valley Bulldogs went into halftime tied 26-26 with No. 12 Class A Clay-Battelle Friday, but an overwhelming second half gave the unbeaten Cee Bees the win, 51-30.

“We feel like we can play with anybody, and we did well in the first half,” TVHS coach Chris Dorminey said. “But we only have 10 upperclassmen, and as the game goes on, to be competitive we have to keep playing them instead of giving them rests, and fatigue in the second half has been a problem for us.”

The Bulldogs fell behind 22-6 in the first quarter, but then turned things around in the second, scoring two touchdowns and a pair of 2-point conversions to tie the game.

“We made some changes in the defensive line, which really got our defense going in the second quarter,” Dorminey said. “We got some big stops, and then managed to get more points on the board offensively.”

Senior Tristen Dumire led the Bulldogs with 123 yards rushing and 1 touchdown. He also had several big quarterback sacks on the defensive side of the ball in the second quarter.

“Our intention was to only play him on offense, but when we got behind we had to put him in on defense, and he really sparked that turnaround in the second quarter for us,” Dorminey said.

Sophomore quarterback Jake Tackett scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the game.

“This was one of his better games,” Dorminey said of Tackett. “He’s growing in the position.”

Junior Hunter Davis also scored a rushing touchdown for the Bulldogs.

Tygarts Valley (1-5) picked up 263 yards rushing in the contest, with 21 yards through the air. Clay-Battelle (5-0) gained 299 yards rushing and 134 passing.

The Bulldogs gave up three turnovers, all of which were converted into points. The Cee Bees had no turnovers on the night.

Friday’s game was one of five straight road games for Tygarts Valley.

They played No. 1 Class A East Hardy last week, and things won’t get much easier next week, as the Bulldogs travel to face No. 2 South Harrison. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
