Workman leads Warriors to win

DUNMORE — Quarterback Wyatt Workman scored four touchdowns Friday to lead the Pocahontas County Warriors past Tygarts Valley, 64-24, in non-conference football action.

“It kind of got away from us early,” said TVHS coach Chris Dorminey. “We struggled on offense and then had to play from behind for the rest of the game.”

Workman ground out a spectacular game for the Warriors, finishing the contest with 11 carries for 232 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Through the air, he completed 4 of 8 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.

The Warriors’ Briar Wilfong pulled down the touchdown reception from 16 yards out.

PCHS running back Morgan Mason carried the ball eight times for 85 yards and 2 scores, while Michael Morrison carried the ball 9 times for 140 yards and 2 TD’s.

The Warriors amassed 476 yards rushing with eight touchdowns on the ground.

For the Bulldogs, quarterback Tristen Dumire carried the ball 27 times for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns.

He also completed 11 of 26 passing attempts for 157 yards, a touchdown and 2 interceptions.

Because of an injury, Dumire, normally a running back, had to take over at quarterback Friday, a position he hadn’t played in several years.

“He played a tremendous game,” Dorminey said. “He threw for 2 touchdowns, ran for another and scored three times on 2-point conversions. He accounted for all our points.”

Hunter Davis chipped in 19 yards on 9 carries, while Zac McCauley pulled in 5 receptions for 88 yards and a TD. Garrett Swecker had 3 receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown.

“I’d also like to recognize our freshman starting center, William Walden, who also played middle linebacker for us for most of the second half,” Dorminey said. “We couldn’t be happier with what he’s doing on the field.”

The Bulldogs offense tallied 116 yards on the ground and 157 yards in the air for 273 yards of total offense.

Pocahontas County (5-3) is set to travel to Summers County on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Tygarts Valley (1-7) is off next Friday, but returns to action Oct. 28 to host Webster County at 7 p.m.

“This was our fifth straight road game, and we played three unbeaten teams in a row — South Harrison, East Hardy and Clay-Battelle,” Dorminey pointed out. “We are happy to have a bye week coming, and to be able to play at home for the last two games.”
