Tucker girls defeat Pocahontas County

HAMBLETON — Tucker County jumped out to a 34-16 halftime lead over Pocahontas County Wednesday before coasting forward to post a 67-28 win during the Lady Mountain Lions’ home opener.

Junior Sydney Moore paced TCHS with 11 points, 5 boards and 4 steals. Moore was also 4-for-4 at the foul line. Sydney Nestor led all scorers with 15, gathered 6 rebounds and shot 7-of-9 at the charity stripe for Tucker County.

Sarah Ryder was the Lady Warriors’ top scorer with 11 in the points column.

“We played some really good defense, and we played fast tonight,” Mountain Lions coach Jim Ambrose said. “It was a great team victory overall. We had a lot of girls get off the bench and they played well. I was very pleased with the spark that the bench brought; that’s what you want to see out of them.”

Sophomore McKinley Murphy put in good game minutes for TCHS, especially in the second quarter when she nailed a three-pointer. In succession, Murphy grabbed a steal, and then fed an assist to senior Jenna Walker who dropped in another trey for the hosts. Murphy finished the contest with 7 points and 5 assists, while Walker inked 7 in the scoring column.

Freshman starter Terra Kuhn put up 8 points, and senior Elizabeth Nichols recorded 5. Junior Dominique Meadows led the Mountain Lions in rebounding with 8.

“We may have our toughest three games of the regular season coming up,” Ambrose said. “We take on AAA Martinsburg on Saturday, and then have the Glenville tournament coming up.”

The 2-0 Class A Lady Mountain Lions will play host to AAA Martinsburg on Saturday. Junior varsity matters are slated to begin at 1 p.m., followed by a varsity tilt on the mountain. On Monday, Tucker will be at the Waco Center on the campus of Glenville State College to take on defending Class A champ Gilmer County. Win or lose in round one of the tournament, TCHS will face either St. Marys or Wheeling Central in the following round.

Pocahontas County (0-1) will be on the road Friday and Saturday to take part in the Roger Oil Classic tournament. The Warriors are slated to face the AA Chapmanville Lady Tigers on Friday.
