Hott resigns as EHS coach

ELKINS — Elkins High School head football coach Greg Hott has resigned his position after 20 years at the helm.

Hott’s resignation was accepted and approved by the Randolph County Board of Education on Tuesday evening.

His resignation as approved is effective as of Jan. 9.

Hott has spend 29 years coaching at Elkins High School, including the last 20 as the Tigers’ head football coach.

Hott’s teams made three trips to the state playoffs, and he finishes with the second-most wins in Elkins High School football history.

For his efforts, Hott was named conference coach of the year on two separate occasions.

Hott has been joined in coaching his team in recent years by his son, Evan Hott, who has served as his defensive coordinator on the Tigers’ staff.

In his final season, Hott’s Tigers went into the last game of the year in November with a shot to make the state playoffs one more time.

Despite playing a tough game, EHS couldn’t quite get it done, falling 17-10 to Buckhannon-Upshur to finish with a 5-5 record for the 2016 season.

“This group of seniors are very, very special young men,” Hott said after the Nov. 6 game. “I can vividly remember them as freshmen, coming in here and working hard. They wanted to be something special, something different. They put in a great deal of work.”

The Inter-Mountain will publish an in-depth article on Hott’s career at Elkins High School in Saturday’s editon.
