D&E Senators close out home schedule with a win

ELKINS — The Davis & Elkins College men’s basketball team picked up an 86-71 win over Malone University on Wednesday night to close out the 2016-17 home schedule at the McDonnell Center.

Kevin Bracy-Davis grabbed his 11th double-double of the season, finishing with 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Senators (12-13, 7-4 G-MAC) in his final home game of his four-year career.

Wesley Sprinkle led the Senators from long distance, as the senior hit seven three pointers in his final home game as well. The seven threes is a school record for the Senators in the G-MAC era.

Rickenjee Bellevue also had a double-double finishing with 15 points and 12 rebounds, as the junior continues to average in double figures in points (10.5) and rebounds (11.7) for the year.

Malone (13-12, 6-6 G-MAC) jumped out to an early lead, going up 8-3, but the Senators quickly responded, tying the game at 14, before going ahead midway through the first quarter. The Senators were hot from behind the arc, hitting five three pointers in just over four minutes to go up 28-21.

The visitors would respond and slowly pulled back at the Senators lead approaching halftime, cutting the D&E lead to 39-36 at the break.

Malone would tie the game to start the second half, but D&E would use an 8-0 to force a timeout from the visitors as the lead expanded to nine with 14 minutes remaining.

After the Pioneers cut the deficit to 53-49, the Senators opened it back up with a 9-0 run, taking a 62-49 lead into the final 10 minutes.

The teams would trade mini runs, with Malone cutting the deficit to as little as five points, but the Senators would open it back up, large in part to three pointers from Sprinkle and strong play inside from Bellevue.

Teron Owens also hit double figures, finishing with 10 points in the game.

The Senators will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a short trip up the road to Philippi to take on rival Alderson Broaddus.Tipoff is set for 4 p.m The winner of Saturday’s game will earn the No. 2 seed in the G-MAC Tournament next week.
