FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Davis & Elkins College softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Fayetteville State on Sunday, winning 4-3 and 5-3.

In game one, the Senators jumped out to an early lead with a run in each of the first two innings. Allie Lapallo had a bases-loaded grounder that scored Alyssa Cairns in the first inning.

In the second inning, Cairns was on the other end of the scoring as her double to left center brought home Morgan Tandarich to put the Senators up 2-0.

After the Broncos pulled back a run in the third, Danielle Norton’s hard hit ball to the right side brought home two more runs as Kelsie Millner and Katie Manson scored to put the Senators up 4-1.

Fayetteville would cut the deficit back to 4-3 in the sixth inning, but Lapallo and the Senator defense would stand strong for the win in game one.

Lapallo tossed all seven innings, earning her second win with five strikeouts and just one walk.

In game two, the Senators would jump out to another early lead, as RBI singles by Kaycee Stott and Manson scored Alexis Smith and Rhetta Persinger to put D&E up 2-0 in the second inning.

Manson would get her second RBI of the game with an infield single that scored Samantha Smith and put the Senators up 3-0.

Fayetteville State would have a big fifth inning, plating three runs to tie the game up.

However, the Senators would pull away as Norton hit her second late-inning homerun of the weekend, this time a two-run shot to left as Cairns was on base, to give the Senators a 5-3 lead.

Sara Tobin would close out the game for the Senators, replacing starter Victoria Krystynak, who pitched the first five innings.

The Senators will now be off until March 9, when D&E will play six games in four days, starting with a doubleheader at Barton College in Wilson, N.C.
