Elkins swimmer honored

MORGANTOWN — Four members of the Elkins High School boys varsity swim team recently qualified for and competed in the state meet held at West Virginia University’s Natatorium. Helping the Tigers place 12th out of 28 squads from around the state were senior Will Crumm, and juniors Hayden Long, Alex Rosencrance and Peyton Shields.

Rosencrance set a new Elkins school record in the qualifying round for the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:09.50, and then broke his own record with a 2:09.41 during the finals round for the event. He also medaled in the 100 yard breaststroke with a fifth place finish time of 1:06.67.

After a season that included setting two new Elkins High School records, Rosencrance has been named to the Big 10 Conference first team. He was further honored by being voted the Big 10’s Male Swimmer of the Year.

Crumm and Shields also garnered recognition by earning second team all-conference accolades.

“This past high school season has been a wonderful experience for a lot of us,” Rosencrance said. “The team made some major improvements that came about because of each swimmer’s hard work at practice. It was a miraculous experience to get to be around these kind people that really supported one another.

“From watching teammates cheer for others at every turn, team dinners before big meets, and many other aspects, we really came together as a team. It was pleasing for us at the state meet to see times continue to drop. I can’t wait to see what the team does next year because we will be coming back even stronger,” Rosencrance added.

“Even though we only had four swimmers qualify to swim at the state meet, they all represented Elkins very well,” EHS coach Aimee Cain said. “With such a small team, we were still able to finish 12th out of 28 state competition teams. That is simply for the fact that each of these four boys qualified in all of their events, and their relays swam best times of the year.

“We studied the heat sheet prior to the actual meet, and focused on team and individual goals. I think everyone was pleased with the results. Even though our relays fell just short of a top-six finish, they all had fastest splits.

“You can’t ask for a better group of guys to work with. They were focused on meeting their goals and making a name for Elkins swimming,” Cain said. “We will miss Will Crumm, the only senior on the team this year. With several returners, we can all look forward to even bigger and better things next season.”
