TENNERTON — Class AAA No. 3 Buckhannon-Upshur High School broke a 20-20 deadlock on the scoreboard at halftime by upending the three-time defending state champion, Morgantown High, by a count of 45-40 on Friday.
The Lady Buccaneers garnered a Region I Section 2 championship trophy, to be displayed in the school’s entrance lobby area for years to come.
“We always know it’s going to be a defensive battle against Morgantown,” B-U coach Jeremy Maxwell said. “It’s always a low-scoring game of defense against them. They have eight seniors that all have three championship rings.
“It’s a match-up of picking out plays,” Maxwell said. “You have to win certain possessions throughout the game. It’s always a one or two possession difference in these type of games.
“I also think our section is the toughest in AAA state-wide,” he said. “We are going to take the weekend off, and have a lot of work to do on Monday in order to prepare for regional play.”
