Lady Senator softball squad opens season

LAURINBURG, N.C. — The Davis & Elkins College Softball team earned a split with St. Andrews University to open up the 2017 season on Saturday.

The Senators struggled in game one, seeing the field for the first time this season, but came back to win game two in extra innings.

Davis & Elkins found itself in a 6-0 deficit after three innings of game one, with the majority of the offense by the Knights coming in a 5-run fifth inning.

After a scoreless fourth, the Senators started to get the bats going, scoring three runs to cut the deficit in half. Kaycee Stott started the inning with a walk. After Morgan Tandarich reached on an error, Kelsie Millner put D&E on the scoreboard with a RBI single to left, scoring Stott.

Alyssa Cairns followed it up with a sacrifice fly to score Tandarich. Katie Manson then had another sacrifice fly, scoring Millner.

However, St. Andrews would answer back with six runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out the game by run-rule victory.

In game two, the Senators fell behind again, as St. Andrews scored two in the first and another run in the third.

Davis & Elkins would have another three-run inning in the fifth, tying the game. Brittany Wade brought around the first run with a double to left center, scoring Manson.

Rhetta Persinger then had a bases load walk that scored Wade before Millner had an RBI groundout, but reached on an error.

However, the Senators would strand the bases loaded and both teams went scoreless through the seventh.

In the eighth inning, with the international tie-breaker rule in effect, Alyssa Cairns led off the inning with a sacrifice bunt to move Millner over to third, but a throwing error would allow Millner to come around and score and Cairns to get to second base.

After Wade walked to put runners at first and second, Danielle Norton picked up her first hit of the day with a big 3-run homerun to left center, giving D&E a 7-3 lead.

Allie Lapallo, who was dealt the loss in game one, pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning to earn a 3-inning win in game two.

The Senators will return to action on Sunday with a trip to Fayetteville, North Carolina, to take on Fayetteville State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
