Lady Warriors fall in sectionals
OAK HILL — The Pocahontas County Lady Warriors took a 42-42 tie into the fourth quarter Tuesday, but were edged 60-56 by top-seeded Fayetteville in a Class A Region 3 Section 1 semifinal game.
The game was tight throughout, with the score tied 16-16 after the first quarter. Pocahontas trailed by two points, 26-24, at the half, but tied it up by the end of the third quarter. The game’s last tie, at 53-53, came during the fourth quarter.
The gym was packed by Fayetteville fans, with many expressing surprise at how well the fourth-seeded Lady Warriors played against Fayetteville, a team ranked No. 7 state-wide.
Senior Sarah Ryder led Pocahontas with 24 points, including shooting 14-for-14 at the foul line. Ryder also pulled down 8 rebounds.
Fellow senior Mary Kelley scored 18 points, including 5 three-pointers. Kelley finished the season with 66 three-pointers, the second-highest total in Lady Warriors’ history.
Senior Lindsey Hartzell racked up 5 assists, 3 steals and 4 rebounds, while freshman Alexa Taylor added 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Fayetteville was led by sophomore Autumn Hill, who scored 21 points.
The loss ended the Lady Warriors’ 15-year streak of making it to the regional championships.
Pocahontas County’s season ends with a record of 12-11, including a 4-6 mark in Potomac Valley Conference action.
