Moorefield downs Lady Warriors

MOOREFIELD — The Moorefield Lady Yellow Jackets opened up a lead in the second quarter Tuesday night and held on to defeat Pocahontas County 49-39.

The game was tied at 9-9 after the first quarter, but Moorefield moved ahead in the second and took a 24-14 advantage into halftime. The Lady Warriors were only able to come within eight points, 36-27, after three quarters, and that’s what the margin of victory turned out to be in the end.

Moorefield freshman Lindsay Rinker had a big game, scoring 21 points — including 10-of-15 shooting at the foul line — and handing out 6 assists and grabbing 8 rebounds and 3 steals.

Her teammate Emma Baker scored 10 points and added 3 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Madison Mcgregor scored 6 points, while Anna Riggleman grabbed 9 rebounds and scored 4 points.

For Pocahontas, freshman Charity Warder led the team with 15 points, a career high for her, and pulled down 6 rebounds. Senior Sara Ryder had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Mary Kelley added 6 points and 3 rebounds.

It was Senior Night for Moorefield, and the team’s two seniors — Katelyn Thompkins and Megan Weekely –were honored.

With the win, Moorefield improves to 11-11.

Pocahontas County falls to 11-9 on the season. The Lady Warriors will play at 3 p.m. Saturday in a sectionals game against Richwood at Oak Hill High School.
