Tucker falls in OT to Vikings

PETERSBURG — Tucker County led by a point after one quarter on Wednesday, trailed by 10 to begin the fourth, and fought back with a 21-11 final frame to send the game into overtime at 68-all against Petersburg.

However, the Vikings took the final advantage and finished the deal with an 80-73 victory in order to improve their record to 12-7.

“We were down 10 at the end of the third, and came back to have a one-point lead late in the fourth,” TCHS coach Dave Helmick said. “We just couldn’t finish the deal during foul shooting situations on both ends.

“We fought back many times, it just wasn’t our night,” he said. “I thought we were going to steal one in the fourth, but things happen.”

Tucker edged PHS 19-18 in the first, before trailing the hosts 38-32 at intermission. The Vikings kept the Mountain Lions at arm’s reach, 19-15, to lead going into the fourth quarter by 57-47. A 21-11 comeback by TCHS in the fourth forced overtime.

Ethan Crosten and Corrick Ambrose tied for the game’s leading scorer with 20 points each. Crosten dished out 5 assists, while Ambrose pulled down 5 boards.

The second- and third-largest scoring column totals belonged to Petersburg’s Cody Southerly and Hunter Pool, with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

Two other Mountain Lions also reached double digits as Kordell Fulton nabbed 10 points, 9 rebounds and 4 takeways, and Josh Kincaid collected 10 boards and 8 points.

Tucker slipped to 12-8, and will be back in action on Saturday when hosting Potomac Valley Conference foe Pocahontas County (12-7) at 7:30 p.m.
