TVHS falls in tourney

BLACKSVILLE — The Tygarts Valley Bulldogs blew a 9-point lead going into the fourth quarter Friday, as the team fell, 77-72, to Clay-Battelle in the third round of the West Virginia Home Town Invitational Tournament.

“After the second and third quarters, we felt like we were in a solid position to close out the game,” TVHS coach Tom Wamsley said. “We just did not close it out. There was a real lack of mental toughness. We just did not close out the game.

“It was a disappointing loss, probably one of the most disappointing losses of the year. We were up 9 points going into the fourth and we had a couple of calls go against us. The crowd got excited. They hit a couple big shots and we didn’t respond well.”

Caleb Riggleman led the way for TVHS with 30 points. Seniors Rece Wamsley, 15 points, and Zac McCauley, 10 points, also reached double digits in scoring for the Bulldogs.

Clay-Battelle’s Tanner Burnette was the game’s top scorer with 38 points. Teammate Gunner Brummage contributed 22 points to the effort.

The Bulldogs took a 21-17 lead after the first period of play.

In the second quarter, TVHS remained on top carrying a 38-29 advantage into the locker room at halftime. After the intermission, both teams battled to a 24-24 tie in the third stanza.

The Cee Bees turned on the offense in the final quarter, outscoring TVHS 24-10, to earn the victory.

Tygarts Valley (5-10) is set to travel to Union High School on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
