AB drops D&E to take series

PHILIPPI — The Alderson Broaddus baseball team topped Davis & Elkins 7-0 and 5-2 to take games three and four of the series at Jack Funk Field.

Zach Salmon pitched a complete-game shutout in game three Sunday as he allowed just four hits and struck out two in seven innings of work. It was Salmon’s third win of the season as he improved his ERA to 2.70.

In the third inning, the Battlers took a 1-0 lead when Tylyn James forced a bases loaded walk to score Cody Cowart. In the fourth, AB added to its lead when Marquis Collier doubled in Tyler Amedure and Cowart followed with an RBI single to score Collier.

The Battlers added four more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away as Andrew Holderman and Amedure drew bases loaded walks to make it 5-0 and then Shane Mallon scored on a wild pitch making it 6-0. To close out the frame, Jordan Martin hit a sacrifice fly to score Holderman.

James, Collier and Luke Shiflett finished with two hits each in the victory as AB finished with 10 in total.

Derek Sicca took the loss on the mound for the Senators as he allowed 10 hits, seven runs, and walked three.

In the final game of the series, AB (11-9 overall, 3-1 G-MAC) got another strong outing on the mound as Justin Smith pitched eight innings and allowed just four hits, one unearned run, and struck out a career-high nine batters for his first win of the season.

After a scoreless first four innings, AB took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI hit-by-pitches from Amedure and Martin and then a sacrifice fly from Martin. After D&E added a run in the eighth, AB scored two more in the bottom half when Collier scored on a wild pitch and Chuck Hooker drew a bases loaded walk to score Cowart.

In the ninth, the Senators scored one run on an RBI single from Sicca and then Mitchell Griffiths came in to record the one-pitch save and got Corey Mays to line out to end it.

Each team finished with five hits in the series finale. Collier went 1-for-3 with an RBI, run scored and walk while Sicca finished 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Senators.

Taking the loss on the mound for D&E (4-17, 1-3) was Brent McMillion who went seven and a third innings and gave up five hits and five runs while striking out five.

AB is back on the field today when it travels to face Seton Hill for a non-conference contest at 3:30 p.m.
