D&E sweeps a pair

GLENVILLE — The Davis & Elkins College softball team picked up a pair of wins over Glenville State, as the bats came alive to total 20 runs in 9-0 and 11-4 victories.

It took a while for the bats to get going in the game, as the Senators held just a 1-0 lead heading to the fifth inning of game one, courtesy of Rhetta Persinger’s solo homer in the second.

However, after Katie Manson reached with a one out single, Alyssa Cairns hit a two-run homerun to start the big afternoon for D&E.

In the sixth inning, Sydney Turner hit a solo homer and Manson came around to score another run on a Kelsie Millner RBI single, extending the lead to 5-0.

The Senators would pile on the runs in the seventh inning, as pinch runner Kaitlyn Giffin scored on a ball put in play by pinch hitter Run Boelter to start the scoring.

Manson would follow it up with an RBI single to score Turner and Cairns doubled to right center, scoring two runs to cap off the scoring for game one.

Allie Lapallo pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win, scattering four hits.

In game two, the Senators would jump on the scoreboard quickly with four runs in the top of the first.

With the bases loaded, Millner scored on a wild pitch. to give the Senators the lead. Brittany Wade then doubled to center field, scoring Danielle Norton.

Alexis Smith followed it up with an RBI single to right, scoring Persinger. Smith would then get caught stealing, but Wade would score on the play to give the Senators a 4-0 lead.

Glenville State would then answer back with three runs in the second and another in the fourth to tie the game.

However, the Senators would pile on seven more runs, including three in the fifth and four in the seventh.

Persinger’s single would bring home the first two runs of the fifth inning and Norton would take home on a double steal with Amy Fincham taking second on the play.

In the seventh inning, the Senators capitalized with two outs scoring four more runs. Wade had a RBI double to start the scoring.

Alexis Smith then singled, allowing two more runs to score before Turner’s RBI double capped off the inning for the Senators.

Victoria Krystynak picked up her second win, tossing six innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits, while also striking out four.

The Senators will return to action on Friday with its G-MAC opener against Trevecca Nazarene.
