D&E lacrosse picks up first win
MURFREESBORO, N.C. — The Davis & Elkins College Men’s Lacrosse team earned its first win in program history on Saturday with a 22-17 defeat of Chowan.
The Senators, who are in their second season, started out on top with a goal by Matthew Dyck just 63 seconds in, scoring on a man-down situation.
The teams would alternate the first 10 goals before Chowan would grab a two-goal advantage in the final minutes of the first quarter, leading 7-5 at the first break.
However, Davis & Elkins would reel off three-straight goals, all by senior Patrick Schneck to take an 8-7 lead just three minutes into the second quarter.
After Chowan tied it up at 8, Davis & Elkins scored four more, with two coming from Jordan Waddell, to take a lead it would never relinquish.
A large part of the big run by the Senators was an 11-to-1 faceoff advantage in the second quarter, which was then repeated in the third quarter. The Senators would win 35 of the 43 faceoffs in the game. Kyle Durec would go 31-for-38 in faceoffs. Connor Shantz won four of his five draws.
The Senators would outscore Chowan 8-3 in the second quarter to take a 13-10 lead into the break.
D&E would add six more in the third, allowing five, before the Senators outscored Chowan 3-2 over the final 15 minutes.
Dyck led the Senators with five goals in the game on six shots.
Schneck had four goals and had three assists, collecting a team-high seven points. He also had two ground balls.
Matt O’Dwyer and Zach Cotoni led the Senators with four ground balls each. O’Dwyer also had four goals and an assist.
Cotoni finished with one goal and four assists. He also had two caused turnovers.
In goal, Kyle Seago went the distance, finishing with 12 saves.
The Senators will return home for their next game. Davis & Elkins will host Young Harris on Wednesday. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at Nuttall Field.
