Dozens to compete in Toughman tonight

ELKINS — Dozens of local amateur fighters have signed up and will take to the ring tonight and Saturday to answer the question, “How tough are you?”

Jerry Thomas’s West Virginia Sports Promotions, Inc. and the Elkins High School Athletic Department will present the 15th annual Original Toughman Contest today and Saturday at the Elkins High School gymnasium. Activities will begin at 7:30 p.m. each evening.

Contestants in the men’s lightweight division include Dustin Bedford of Buckhannon; Daniel “Devil Pup” Goddard of New Martinsville; John Goontz of Pine Grove; James “Casper” Hall of Weston; David Malcomb of Frametown; William Moss of Terra Alta; Cody Sendling of Beverly; Cody Tacy of Buckhannon; Dillion Walters of McHenry, Maryland; Zach Wright of Weston; Zeb Young of Coalton; and Zane Young of Elkins.

Women’s light heavyweight contestants include Daytona Maher of Buckhannon and Mandy Wells of Clarksburg.

Fighting in the women’s middleweight division will be Selina “Daddy’s Girl” Likens of Kingwood and Amanda Sweeney of Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Women’s lightweight division contestants include Brittany “The Dancer” Gribble of Philippi; Tasha Knotts of Grafton; Ashley Long of Terra Alta; and Kaylyn “Squat” Taulton of Knoxville, Maryland.

The featured pro fight will be Saturday and features former “two-time” Elkins Toughman champion Dakota “The Lone Wolf” Linger, of Buckhannon facing Dwayne Shelton. Also planned is a bout between Samantha Pill and Kerestan North.

This year’s event is being sponsored by Performance Chevy, Elkins Express Care, the North Central West Virginia Airport, 5 News WDTV, 98.9 WDNE and Network West Virginia.

All bouts are scheduled for three one-minute rounds, with all fighters wearing 16-ounce boxing gloves, protective headgear and a mouth piece. All applicants must be in good physical condition.

The weight divisions for both men and women are: lightweight (139 pounds and under), middleweight (140-149 pounds), light heavyweight (160-184 pounds), and heavyweight (185-400 pounds). There is no entry fee.

Up to $12,000 in cash prize monies will be awarded. Each man’s weight class champion will receive up to $1,000, and each runner-up will receive up to $300. Prize money for the women’s may be different depending on the number of fighters.

Each champion will receive a Toughman jacket. Each weight class runner-up will receive a trophy or plaque. “Miss Ring Girl” will receive $1,000 and a jacket. Second-, third- and fourth-place ring girls will each receive $200.
