EHS boys claim win on the track

BUCKHANNON — The Elkins High School track teams got their 2017 season underway this week in Buckhannon.

The boys team opened up their season claiming victory over the host team Buckhannon and visiting Lewis County on Tuesday.

The boys opened things up with a first-place finish in the first event of the day, the 4x800m relay.

The team of Devan Ricottilli, Brendan Wallace, Abe Gallagher-Reyes and Mason Clark finished the race in a time of 8:49.1 to claim the first of many titles on the day.

Keeping with wins in relay action, the 4x400m relay of Lucas Masten, Wallace, Adam Yokum, and Ricottilli would claim first in a time of 3:51.05, while the 4x100m relay of Mason Kimbleton, Masten, Yokum, and Logan Bickel would take second in a time of 48.39 in the 4x100m relay.

In open event action, Ricottilli would follow up his relay success with first-place finishes in the high jump with a leap of 5’4”, and in the 1600m in a time of 5:20.43.

Clark would also find individual success in the 3200m, claiming the top prize in a time of 11:03.34. Sam Stephenson would also collect a first-place finish for the Tigers, claiming the top podium spot in the 800m in a time of 2:20.32.

In the field events, Zach Hyre was a double victor on the day claiming first in both the shot put with a throw of 36’04” and in the discus with a sling of 87’06”.

Wallace also laid stake to the top spot in the pole vault, launching a leap of 9′.

Josh Browning claimed second in shot, Hayden Long second in 110m high hurdles, Jacob Lewis second in the 3200m, and Abe Gallagher-Reyes second in the 1600m.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our boys’ efforts. We’ve seen the things where we need to work on, and even the boys recognize that fact. It’s shaping up to be a great season with an incredible group of hard-working young men,” said Elkins High boys coach Matt Lewis.

“I really think we have room to work on, but these guys have a great deal of potential,” added assistant coach Jonny Gainer.

In girls action, the 4x100m relay of Nonee High, Hannah Phillips, Tiara Rowe and Sofia Triplett tasted victory in a time of 54.32, while the 4x200m relay of High, Carmen Woodward, Rowe, and Triplett took the prize in 1:54.50, and the 4x400m relay of High, Kaci Zopp, Rowe, and Triplett would also find pay dirt in 4:31.22 to take first.

Zopp would also take first in the pole vault, with a launch of 7’6”.

“These girls are awesome to work with and have upward mobility, for sure,” said girls head coach Letitia Propst. “I like where we are at, and I love where we can be come May.”

In team action, the boys claimed the team title by a score of 74, to runner-up host Buckhannon-Upshur’s 51 and Lewis County’s 49.

In girls action, Lewis County earned the victory with 71, followed by runner-up Elkins with 56 and Buckhannon-Upshur with 51.

The Tigers will be back action on Friday, as they host the Irwin Invitational at 3:30 p.m.
