EHS Lady Tigers earn victory at home
ELKINS — Korri Evans earned the victory Friday, as the Lady Tigers downed Liberty, 3-2, in Big 10 Conference softball action.
“Our offense started off really slow,” EHS coach Sherri Collett said. “We couldn’t really put together a string of hits until about the fifth inning. Our defense was solid. I don’t think we had any errors. I was really proud of our seniors stepping up and taking charge and winning the game in the end.”
In 7 innings, Evans gave up 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1.
Liberty’s Logan Shanholtz scattered 8 hits over 6 innings pitched, while striking out 3 and walking 1.
Sydney Leary set the pace for EHS at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a run scored. Sierra Poling finished the day 1 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs, while Haley Smith went 1 for 1 with a run scored. Haley Collet went 0 for 3, but reached base on an error and scored a run.
Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, before the Lady Tigers erupted for 3 runs in the fifth stanza. In that inning, Leary singled and was moved to second on a bunt by Smith. Collett then hit a routine pop fly, but an error on the play allowed her to reach base and score Leary.
Next up, Poling crushed a 2-run double to score Smith and Collett and give EHS a 3-0 lead. Liberty scored again in the sixth inning, but couldn’t take the victory away from the Lady Tigers.
Elkins (1-2) is set to travel to Keyser today for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
