ELKINS — Elkins High School senior Dalton Hamrick has been a kick-start player for every squad he has represented for the Fighting Tigers, and the votes are in — he has received honorable mention recognition on the Class AA All-State squad, and knocked down Second Team honors in the Big 10 Conference.

Senior season averages for Hamrick include 19 points per game, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for the orange and black varsity attack. Hamrick is a three-year letterman for Elkins.

“He’s been a cornerstone for our program,” third-year EHS coach Brandon Simmons said. “He anchored the freshmen, JV and varsity teams during his time. He’s always the first one there for anything, and the first to volunteer. He will certainly be missed. He got the word out to the team right away at every point when communications needed sent.”

Elkins fought their way to a 9-15 record this past season, the improving Tigers’ best mark in Simmons’ three-year tenure. Their margin of loss was much slimmer than what it was a season ago, and a tribe of returning players is slated to be back next year.

Simmons said Hamrick truly is a class act as a student athlete on campus at EHS.

“Dalton is a leader in the classroom with strong academics, never gets in trouble, doesn’t miss school, and is just a very dedicated Elkins High School student,” he said. “He travels to away games for other school teams on the road to cheer them on.

“His hard work and dedication will be missed,” Simmons said. “Not too many people get to average 19 points a game, I give him props on that for sure. Dalton has been a big part in the change of the culture. We have an identity now.”

Additional Big 10 accolades went out to First Team recipients Brennan Frye from Buckhannon-Upshur, who averaged 18 points and 7 boards per game. Austin Upton, David Shriver and Spencer Hudkins also made the First Team grade for Philip Barbour.

Second Team earners include Lewis County’s Nate Frazier and Thomas Hogan, along with Philip Barbour’s Noah Price.
