Elkins Tigers fall to RCB in semi-final

CLARKSBURG — The basketball season came to a close for the Tigers Tuesday, as Elkins fell to Robert C. Byrd, 60-49, in the Class AA Region II Section 1 semi-final game.

“We left it all on the court, that’s all I can ask for,” EHS coach Brandon Simmons said. “This is always the hardest time of the year. They want it so bad. It is what it is and everything must come to an end at some point. Tonight was their night.”

Elkins took a 13-6 lead after the first quarter of play. RCB battled back and took a 27-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. EHS took the third quarter, 13-11, but gave up 22 points in the fourth quarter to let the victory slip away. RCB made 10 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter.

“That was the scrappiest bunch of guys I’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching,” Simmons said. “The played for every ball. They really went after it. They always left it all out on the floor and they always played hard. I’m definitely going to miss our seniors.”

Senior guard Dalton Hamrick set the tone for Elkins with 22 points. Jacob White, 9 points, Matt Wilson, 7 points, Kyle Riggleman, 5 points, Elliot White, 4 points, and Devan Ricottilli, 2 points, rounded out the scoring for the Tigers.

Norman Junkins was the top scorer for the Flying Eagles with 17 points. William Collier, 13 points, Brice Roseborough, 11 points, and Danah Phillips, 10 points, also reached double digits in scoring for RCB.

The Elkins Tigers finish the season with 9 wins and 15 losses.

RCB will now host Lincoln later this week for the Class AA Region II Section 1 title.
