Lady Battlers take doubleheader from W.Va. Tech

PHILIPPI — The Alderson Broaddus softball team scored a combined 19 runs Wednesday afternoon as they earned the sweep over West Virginia Tech with 11-8 and 8-4 victories in their home opener at North Philippi Field.

After a scoreless first, the Battlers jumped out in front in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Miranda Garrett reached on an error to score Whitney Brown and later in the inning Madeline Kalchik drove in Jazmine Martin and then Garrett scored following an error.

After the Golden Bears added a run in the third to make it 3-1, Samantha Turner doubled home Alexis Kimball to make it 4-1 and then Alexxi Timmons belted her first homerun of the season to right-center field to give AB a 6-1 lead.

Garrett gave the Battlers a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single scoring Brown, and then after West Virginia Tech pulled within just two in the sixth, Timmons doubled in Kimball, Julianna Bravo singled in Turner, and then Timmons and Bravo scored later in the frame to extend the lead to 11-5.

The Golden Bears had one final chance in the seventh as they scored three runs off of Brianna Burger but Sarah Dohn grounded out to Burger to end it.

AB tallied 13 hits in the opener and finished with five extra-base hits and six stolen bases. Timmons led the way as she went 2-for-3 with three RBI’s and two runs scored as Kimball finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Also with multi-hit games for AB were Bravo and Brown who each went 2-for-4.

On the mound, Kalchik pitched four innings and allowed one run, none earned, and struck out three for her third win of the season. Karina Antancio took the loss on the mound for the Golden Bears as she gave up 13 hits, 11 runs, nine earned, and struck out three. Skylar Connelly and MaKayla Waugh each finished with three hits for West Virginia Tech.

In the nightcap, AB (6-6) took the lead in the first when Timmons drove in Turner for the first run of the game with an RBI bunt single. In the second, the Golden Bears quickly answered as they scored four runs off of Battler starter Chelsea Morrow to take the three-run lead.

Bravo cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning as she hit a solo home run to left field, her first of the season. In the next inning, Bravo stepped up to the plate again and launched her second homer of the game, scoring Timmons, to even the game at 4-4. Later in the inning, Jazmine Martin hit for Sarah Tekavec and drove in Brown with two outs to put AB on top 5-4.

After a scoreless fourth, Tekavec reached on a Golden Bear error as Brown and Bravo scored on the play to give AB a few insurance runs to make it 7-4. In the bottom of the sixth, the Battlers scored one more run when Timmons doubled in Kimball to make it 8-4.

In relief, Kalchik pitched four innings for the Battlers she picked up her second win on the day. She gave up two hits and walked one. Timmons closed out a strong day as she went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in game two as Bravo finished 2-for-4 with two home runs and two runs scored.

On Friday, AB is back in action when it hosts Ursuline for the first G-MAC contest of the season at 3 p.m. for the first of four weekend games with the Arrows.
