BUCKHANNON — The 2016-17 Class AAA No. 2 Lady Buccaneers basketball team took Buckhannon-Upshur High School to new heights over the winter by breaking records and earning crowns on their way to Charleston, where they achieved a runners-up award in the state tournament.

In recognition of the Lady Bucs’ efforts, four starting players were recently named to the AAA All-State team, voted on by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

First Team accolades went to junior point guard Hanna McClung, who handled the ball and directed traffic as the Lady Bucs lit up the scoreboard for 71 points a game on average. She finished with 16 points per contest, adding 5 rebounds, 5 assists and nearly 4 steals per game.

Senior forward Makayla Reynolds put up a team-leading 50 points during the state tournament games in Charleston, and was named Captain of the All-State Second Team.

During her last of three games in the AAA tournament, Reynolds nabbed 24 points, 8 boards and shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Her senior year averages included 15 points and 9 rebounds each time out for the Bucs.

Junior Lauren Bennett earned a Third Team nod. She delivered a balanced contribution on the stat sheet with 10 points per contest to go along with 5 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds on average.

Sophomore Alli Robinson garnered honorable mention notice by netting 10 points and 3 takeways per game for Buckhannon-Upshur.

After winning 56 games over the past three seasons, and making the state playoffs three years in a row, third-year Buckhannon-Upshur varsity coach Jeremy Maxwell summed things up pretty well in his finals round post-game press conference.

“I thought our girls battled hard, effort is never an issue with this team,” Maxwell said.

He noted the team is very capable, and that most of the Buccaneers’ starting contributors will return next year, with the exceptions of seniors Lauren Louk and Reynolds. He added the B-UHS squad was made up of winners with a lot of heart.
