Lady Vikings start 4-0
PETERSBURG — The Lady Vikings dismantled AA Potomac Valley Conference foe Frankfort 8-0 and then 1-0 Friday to sweep a doubleheader versus the Falcons. Petersburg is now 4-0 on the year.
An offensive spurt in the second inning of the first game scored all 8 of the hosts’ runs behind a five-inning shutout performance by Hayley Ours and the Vikings defense. Ours only allowed 2 hits, walked none and struck out 1.
“She pitched well and threw a lot of strikes with good command,” PHS coach Bubba Hedrick said. “Hayley made quality pitches to get kids out.”
Singles by Keri VanMeter, Lexi Earle and Alexis Vance had the bases loaded before freshman Carly Cooper garnered an RBI single. Leah Hahn went to bat and pushed 2 more runs across the plate, before Callie Wisnewski emerged with a 2 run homer to seal game one’s result in favor of the home team.
Cooper went on to record a 9th-grader’s gem of a first-ever starting role on the varsity mound in the second gamel. Cooper started the contest, and went all 7 innings for a shutout win. Cooper sent 15 Frankfort batters back to the dugout via strikeouts over the course of her first start for Petersburg.
“We didn’t intend on pitching Carly the whole game, we were just trying to get her feet wet,” Hedrick said. “But she pitched so well, and it was a nice debut for her. Team wise, it was crazy. We put up 8 runs in the first game early, and then we just seemed to go away as far as offense goes.”
Petersburg will host Philip Barbour today.
