Moorefield softball team splits games

CHARLES TOWN — Bethany Smith pitched the Lady Yellow Jackets out of a bases loaded jam Saturday, to help Moorefield split a double header with Washington High School. MHS lost the first game, 6-0, but rallied in the second contest to win, 6-4.

“We came out flat in the first game,” MHS assistant coach Julie Markwood said. “Their pitcher threw a lot of junk balls and the girls hadn’t seen anything like that before. She also had a down right nasty changeup. In the second game, the girls settled down and got focused. They strung some hits together and won the ballgame.”

In the first contest, Taylor Cenate earned the victory. She gave up 7 hits and struck out 4 batters.

Rebekah Markwood took the loss, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1. At the plate, she went 2 for 4.

Sumer Flinn and Smith both went 1 for 3 with doubles. Macy Zirk, Anna Riggleman and Paige Crites each collected singles.

In the second game, Emma Baker earned the victory for MHS. She gave up 4 runs on 8 hits and struck out 1 batter in 6 innings for work. With bases loaded in the seventh inning, Smith entered the game to relieve Baker and closed out the contest and preserve the victory.

Rebekah Markwood went 1 for 2 with a triple, an RBI and 2 walks. Baker went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Riggleman went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Carmen Ketterman went 1 for 2 with an RBI and Hanna Carlson went 1 for 2.

Moorefield (4-1) is set to return to action on Wednesday when the team travels to Massanutten, Va. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
