Moorefield wins third straight

MOOREFIELD — Bethany Smith crushed a solo home run in the fifth inning Friday to help power Moorefield past Allegheny, 7-6, in girls varsity softball action.

“It was a very well-played game on both sides of the ball,” MHS assistant coach Julie Markwood said. “It was back and forth. We got out to a very slow start, but picked up the pace a little bit after the second inning on. I don’t remember the last time we had a 7-6 ball game to be honest. The girls had to play hard the entire game..”

Aside from a good day at the plate, Smith also picked up the victory on the mound. She pitched 6 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 6 hits while striking out 9 batters and walking 5 others. At the plate, she went 2 for 4 with the home run.

Shanel Stott took the loss for Allegheny. She gave up 7 runs on 10 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1.

Rebekah Markwood set the pace on offense for MHS, going 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Sumer Flinn went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Emma Baker, Alyssa Vetter, Macy Zirk and Anna Riggleman all notched 1 hit each. Baker and Zirk also recorded 1 RBI each.

Moorefield (3-0) is set to return to action today for a double header at Washington High School. Game 1 is set for 11 a,m. and Game 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m.
