PBHS places two on Class AA All-State list

Philip Barbour senior Chelsea Mayle has been named to the Class AA All-State squad for the third year in a row. Mayle scored more than 1,200 points in her high school career.

PHILIPPI — Philip Barbour High School senior Chelsea Mayle and 11th-grade teammate Adriana Christopher helped the Lady Colts battle to a record of 14-11 this season, the best PBHS mark over the past four years, and have been recognized accordingly with Class AA All-State honors.

Mayle became a three-time All-State honoree by being named a Third-Team selection for her senior year. She earned honorable mention recognition after both her sophomore and junior seasons, and has led the Colts’ Corral in scoring all four years of her varsity career. Mayle finished with a total of 1,276 career points scored for Philip Barbour.

“Losing a scorer with that type of presence and leadership is going to be tough,” PBHS coach Curtis Bodkins said. “We’ve been talking to coaches at the next level, and I hope she gets a chance to play. To be named one of the top 24 players in the state says a lot about the career Chelsea Mayle has had.”

Christopher has been a starter for three years now, and ran the court strong for the Colts in her junior campaign to help PB earn a sectional crown. Season totals for the versatile guard nearly equal a double-double each game out. Christopher’s 11th-grade season averages include 9.6 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists per contest.

“Adriana’s averages for a point guard are pretty impressive,” Bodkins said. “She has ran the floor corner to corner in basically every game played this year. Christopher has a solid work ethic, and is already saying how important it is for off-season regimens to be completed in order for next season’s results to be potentially at their best.”

Lewis County’s girls’ squad narrowly missed an invite to the AA state tournament stage. Representing the Minutemaids on the Honorable Mention squad are senior Alexis Rumbach, junior Sarah Post and sophomore Isabella Posey.

Fighting out of the Big 10 Conference is not an easy thing to do. Four of the eight teams that made it to Charleston for the AA state tournament this season represented the Big 10.

Fairmont Senior won out, and brought this season’s AA championship back to hang in the conference’s whereabouts. North Marion and Lincoln, along with Bridgeport, also made the trip. Buckhannon-Upshur kept the Big 10 alive into the finals as well, in Class AAA.
