Tigers take early lead, hang on for 12-9 win over Braxton

ELKINS — The Elkins Tigers exploded for 6 runs in the first inning Friday, en route to a 12-9 victory over Braxton County.

“Offensively, we hit the ball much better today,” EHS coach Jack Crumm said. “I guess some of the timing issues are getting worked out. We hit a lot of balls hard. They made some plays, but we had several doubles and a lot of singles. We had nine hits on the day. So it was a pretty good day. Opening up the first inning with six runs in the home half of the inning, that really helped things along. Batters got up with more confidence.”

Ben Huffman earned the win for the Tigers, going 2 2/3 innings on the mound. Huffman gave up 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 2 batters.

Kyle Riggleman pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 1 batter. Read Schumacher closed out the game for EHS, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits in 2 innings pitched.

Ben Fincham took the loss for Braxton County. He gave up 6 runs on 4 hits and walked 3 batters.

Luke Petrice paced the Tigers offense, going 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Jesse Williams finished the game 2 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI’s and a run scored. Huffman went 1 for 2 with a double and Russell Shiflett went 1 for 1 with a double.

The Elkins Junior Varsity team also won their contest against Braxton County, 10-2. Remington Stanley earned the victory for EHS in that game.

The Tigers (2-0) will travel to Buckhannon-Upshur today. Game time is set for 1 p.m. A junior varsity contest will follow.
