D&E golfer earns title
LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Alistair Kyle shot a final round 67 to climb five places and win the 2017 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday at the Four Bridges Country Club, helping the Senators to a second-place finish overall.
Kyle started the day in sixth place after rounds of 76 and 74 on Monday.
The senior went out by cutting off five strokes in the first seven holes to begin the day and held that level throughout the remainder of the round to close out a three-round total of 217 to finish 1-over par for the tournament.
Kyle’s performance helped the Senators shoot a 298 on the final day to secure second place overall with a +45 for the tournament.
Kollin Hopwood was a big part of the Senators strong day, as he shot the only other sub-par round on the day with a 1-under par round of 71. Hopwood used his strong performance to climb up to a fourth-place finish, also earning All-Conference honors along with Kyle.
Hopwood finished the Tournament at +6 with a three-round total of 222.
James Sutherland took third for the Senators, shooting rounds of 75, 77 and 75 over the three days to finish at +11 and in a tie for 8th place overall. Ben Marshall also scored for the Senators in all three rounds. Marshall shot 77 and 81 on day one and finished with an 85 in the final round.
Jack Gibson shot 79 on day one and 85 over the final two rounds of the tournament.
Kyle, along with the Senators now await an at-large bid into the NCAA Championships. The second-place finish is the best for the Senators in the G-MAC, as the previous best for D&E was a third in 2014.
