Fermosel leads D&E’s honors

Fermosel

INDIANAPOLIS — Laura Fermosel led the way for the Davis & Elkins College women’s tennis team represented in the 2017 Women’s Tennis Great Midwest Athletic Conference Awards, as the sophomore was announced as the G-MAC Conference Player of the Year.

Four Senators, three student-athletes and head coach Otis Cutshaw were recognized with awards.

In her first year with the program, Fermosel was pronounced the Conference Player of the Year after a phenomenal first season at D&E, which includes a No. 8 ranking in the region, the first ever for the Senators program.

The Spaniard newcomer from Colmenar Viejo capped off a regular season with a 20-5 record in singles action, including a 19-3 record in dual matches. Fermosel also compiled 15 wins in doubles play and a 14-8 record in dual matches with teammate Elise Simon, who also made the postseason awards list for the Senators.

Fermosel manned the top of the D&E rotation for the top-seeded Senators, who are aiming for their third conference title in five years. She was a G-MAC Athlete of the Month during the fall and a two-time G-MAC Athlete of the Week in the spring season. Fermosel led the conference in total singles victories.

Coach of the year plaudits went to Cutshaw, who navigated his program to another undefeated run through the conference schedule for the second year in a row. Davis & Elkins was 12-10 overall and 6-0 in league play.

Simon, who was last year’s G-MAC Freshman of the Year, repeated as a member of the G-MAC All-Conference team. Simon finished the regular season with a 12-10 mark at the No. 2 spot in dual match action. Simon was 5-1 in G-MAC singles play, with her only loss coming in a third set tie-breaker to G-MAC Freshman of the Year Janelle English.

Senior Haileigh Carper also earned all-conference honors, wrapping up her career with the Senators by earning a 15-6 record overall in dual matches this season. Carper was a big help for the Senators going undefeated (5-0) in conference play in singles action. Carper also went 5-1 in doubles action for the Senators with teammate Amanda Fewster.

The Lady Senators women’s tennis team won the 2017 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament Championship, defeating Cedarville 5-1 to earn back-to-back titles.

The Senators got off to a strong start, taking two of three from the Yellow Jackets in doubles play.

Laura Fermosel and Elise Simon started off by winning the No. 1 doubles match with an 8-2 victory over Lauren Jackson and Kristen Heydt.

Ester Bolmenas and Kelsie Roby also picked up a win in the No. 3 doubles match with an 8-1 victory over Rosie Thompson and Deanna Whalen.

With the early advantage, Davis & Elkins set their sights on three wins in singles action and the Senators earned those wins with the first three points finished.

Simon closed out her No. 2 singles match first with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Janelle English.

Roby then moved the Senators to within one point of the title as she defeated Heydt 6-1, 6-0.

Bolmenas earned the Senators the final point needed to clinch the victory moments later as she finished off a 6-2, 6-4 win over Halie Hardwick to give the Senators a sweep of the Regular Season and Tournament Championship.
