Lady Tigers claim a pair of victories

Elkins sophomore Addison Huffman slides into third base Wednesday afternoon.

ELKINS — The Elkins High Lady Tigers earned a pair of victories on Senior Night Wednesday, downing Robert C. Bryd, 10-2 in the first game, and 7-1 in the second contest.

“Korri (Evans) pitched both games and went all the way through,” EHS coach Sherri Collett said. “We had some really good defense behind her. It was a good win for us. We’re heading into sectionals next week and I think we’re really on a good roll.”

Between games, the Lady Tigers conducted Senior Night activities. The six senior players and the team manager, along with their parents, were recognized in a ceremony on the field. Elkins seniors include Evans, Abby Collett, Haley Collett, Sydney Leary, Sierra Poling, Madison Wagner and manager Bailey Young.

“I coached this group of girls when they played in middle school,” coach Collett said. “So having them for their senior year, it was truly a blessing for me. They’ve come a long ways. This senior season has been really special for them. They’ve played together for so long, it’s just been a really special senior year. This will be a force that will definitely be hard to replace next year. They will definitely be missed.”

In the first game, Evans earned the victory on the mound. In 5 innings, she struck out 8 batters and surrendered 2 runs on 2 hits.

Haley Collett set the pace at the plate. She went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple, 4 RBIs and 1 run scored. McKenzie Guy also finished the game 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Madison Wagner, 1 for 3 with 2 runs, and Gracee Huffman, 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, also played well.

Evans notched another victory in the second game. In that contest, she went 7 innings and gave up 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 10 batters.

Haley Collett, 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, and Hali Newlon, 2 for 3 with a home run, 2 runs scored and an RBI, were tops at the plate for EHS. Evans, Poling, Wagner and Huffman drove in runs in the contest, while Sydney Leary picked up a pair of hits. Haley Smith and Abby Collett crossed the plate to score runs for Elkins.

Elkins (8-10) is scheduled to host Bridgeport today at 6 p.m.
