Lady Viking tosses no-hitter

PETERSBURG — Junior Hayley Ours threw a no-hitter for Petersburg High School (12-0) Wednesday to help the Vikings shut out visiting Keyser, 9-0, in Class AA Potomac Valley Conference action.

Included in Ours’ grounding of the KHS Golden Tornado were 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

“Hayley did a super job,” PHS coach Bubba Hedrick said. “She’s really not a strikeout pitcher, she works well with good command. She throws the ball where she wants to.”

After a scoreless first, Petersburg put the scorekeeper to work with 5 runs crossing the plate in the bottom of the second.

Seniors Lexi Earle and Alexis Vance both singled and Carly Cooper put up a 2-RBI single.

Junior Marissa Earle drew a walk, and 12th grader Callie Wisnewski made Keyser pay with a triple that drove in 2 more runs for the hosts.

An error pushed the PHS lead to 5-0.

Third-inning woes for the visitors began by walking Lauren Fleming and Lexi Earle onto first and second. Vance advanced the two runners with a sacrifice bunt play.

On the next at bat, Ours bunted as well, and beat the throw to first.

The Vikings’ runners stayed on the move, and an errant throw back to the plate allowed a run scored by Fleming.

Lexi Earle was on third, and Ours was on second. Marissa Earle stepped into the batter’s box and reported with a 2-RBI double to give PHS an 8-0 lead. Senior Leah Hahn capped the 9-0 win off with an RBI single.

Weather forecasts do not bode well for Petersburg’s next scheduled contests, being slated at AA Harrison County School’s Lincoln on Friday and Bridgeport on Saturday
