Lady Vikings post 9-1 victory

MOOREFIELD — Potomac Valley Conference foes Petersburg and Moorefield met up for a varsity scrum Wednesday and Class AA PHS claimed a 9-1 mercy-rule win at the Hive.

The Petersburg Lady Vikings now have a 14-0 record on the year.

The hosting Lady Yellow Jackets’ lone run came in the bottom of the first to tie the game up at 1-1. From there, the Vikings posted 4 more runs in the third, and stopped the contest early with 4 additional runs crossing the plate in the fifth frame.

Petersburg freshman hurler Carly Cooper threw a complete game, giving up 1 run while earning the win. Cooper only allowed 1 hit while fanning 7 Moorefield batters. She walked 3, and put up a hit on offense for Petersburg.

Kerri VanMeter singled and doubled, notching 2 RBIs along the way. Alexis Vance pulled out the big stick with a 2-RBI triple. Haley Ours belted an RBI single.

Nearly all the starters for Petersburg garnered hits to help keep the Lady Vikings’ attack on the move.

Marissa and Lexie Earle, Callie Wisnewski and Leah Hahn all made contact in order to at least reach first base for PHS, creating runners on the path to home plate.

Petersburg will be idle today while readying for a weekend road trip to Marion County. North Marion High School will host a total of 9 teams for a 10-team affair traditionally known as the Diamond Dog Tournament.

The Lady Vikings are slated for one game on Friday in Rachel at NMHS. Saturday’s slate has Petersburg set to face Lincoln at 10 a.m., before facing Buckhannon-Upshur at 2 p.m..
