Monsignor Annie speaks at local service

ELKINS — Many people gathered locally and around the world in celebration of Good Friday.

Speaking to the congregation at Saint Patrick Parish in Coalton on Friday, Monsignor Frederick Annie referenced Saint John’s Passion Narrative.

Annie is the episcopal vicar for clergy of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.

“I like to think of Saint John as the poet among the evangelists — never missing the opportunity for the perfect wording or the occasion to point out a deeper meaning that exists beneath his obvious illustrations,” Annie said.

In this, Annie explained that John used a certain phrase when describing the death of Jesus.

“He writes, near the end of the long narrative, ‘and bowing his head, he handed over the spirit,'” he said.

Annie emphasized that the action of Jesus bowing his head is seen by the church as a reminder.

“With this action of submission, he acknowledges his acquiescence to the will of his Father,” Annie said.

“Remember that we say his life is not taken from him; he, by his own will, hands over his life for us.

“We, too, must acknowledge and accept the Father’s will in our lives, that we stand with our brother Christ as beloved children of our Father – receiving his divine mercy,” Annie said.
