Moorefield comeback edges East Hardy, 3-2

MOOREFIELD — A throwing error late in the game Thursday gave Moorefield a 3-2 victory over East Hardy in Potomac Valley Conference softball action.

“We were very proud of the girls for not giving up,” MHS assistant coach Julie Markwood said. “It was 0-0 until the fifth inning when they scored their two runs. Their No. 7 hitter hit a home run. So we were down 0-2, but the girls continued to fight and stayed the course the whole game.

“Up until the sixth inning, when we scored our 3 runs, we only had one base runner. Everything we hit was right at them. There were only two strike outs on both sides, actually. Everything we hit, we just hit right at them. The girls, they didn’t become discouraged, which is very good for this group of girls because they tend to get discouraged when they get down. So, it was good for them to fight and come back and win the game,” she added.

Down 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Yellow Jackets found a spark when Anna Riggleman, Bethany Smith and Sumer Flinn strung together consecutive base hits. Hanna Carlson then rapped a single that scored Riggleman and Smith. A throwing error on the play allowed Flinn to cross the plate, giving Moorefield the lead.

Carlson, Riggleman, Smith and Flinn, along with Alyssa Vetter and Paige Crites, tallied 1 hit each for the Lady Yellow Jackets. Vetter’s hit was a double.

Carlson earned the victory on the mound. She pitched 2 innings in relief, giving up 1 hit and striking out 1 batter. Emma Baker started the game for Moorefield, putting in 5 innings of work. She gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and struck out 1 batter.

Brooke Miller notched the loss for the Lady Cougars. In 6 innings of work, she gave up 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 2 batters and walking 1 other.

Jessica Smith set the pace at the plate for EHHS, going 1 for 3 with a home run, 2 RBIs and a run scored. Sky Metzler, Julie Hahn and Leanna Bayse also collected 1 hit each.

Moorefield (13-5) is set to host Strasburg on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

East Hardy is set to travel to Washington High School today for a double header. Game times are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
