Senators drop a pair to Malone University

Davis & Elkins junior pitcher Noah Jarboe uncorks a throw Friday afternoon.

ELKINS — The Davis & Elkins College baseball team fell to Malone University in its doubleheader on Friday at Harpertown Field to open the Great Midwest Athletic Conference series.

The Senators fell in game one 2-1, despite a quality pitching performance from Tyler Honeycutt. However, the Senators dropped the second game 11-1 to Malone.

Davis & Elkins took an early lead in game one, as Michael Wood’s two-out double to left center scored Robbie McKinney from first. McKinney and Wood both went 2-for-4 in the game.

Malone would breakthrough against Honeycutt and finally get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, tying the game at one.

Tied at one, the visitors would go ahead in the eighth with another RBI single.

A Malone baserunner slides into third as D&E’s Michael Wood tries to haul in the relay from the outfield.

The Senators would muster seven hits in the contest, but were unable to piece them together against the Malone ace, Roscoe Blackburn.

Honeycutt matched Blackburn nearly pitch for pitch, tossing all nine innings, recording nine strikeouts with no walks and nine hits.

In game two, Malone jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first.

The Senators answered back with Johnny Liu’s unearned run in the bottom of the first, but it would be all Pioneers after that.

Malone used a three-run homerun to cap a four-run second inning. The Pioneers then score three unearned runs on two errors in the third.

The Pioneers would add another run in the fourth and fifth to cap the scoring.

Derek Sicca would pick up the loss, allowing six runs on five hits and a walk in 1.1 innings pitched.

Liu was the only multi-hit performance for the Senators, going 2-2 with a walk and a run.

The Senators close the series on Saturday with another doubleheader slated for a 12 p.m. start at Harpertown Field.
