Tigers stumble against Lincoln

SHINNSTON — Class AA No. 3 ranked Elkins lost to Lincoln, 11-6, on Friday in the conclusion of a game that started on March 30.

Officials suspended the game in March after the lights at the field in Elkins malfunctioned and visibility was hindered. At that time, the game was tied 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning with Lincoln at bat.

When the action resumed on Friday, Lincoln pushed 6 runs across the plate in their half of the fifth inning and tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh. Elkins retaliated in the bottom of the seventh inning with 2 runs, but couldn’t bounce back.

“It’s definitely tough when the game is split up,” EHS coach Jack Crumm said. “You have to get refocused and come back out. Both times, we traveled to their place for the split-up games, which gave them more time to be ready. They were ready. They came out swinging the bat and hit the ball well …

“It’s just tough, with the rain and the all different things that happen to spread games out. Yesterday, we were playing at Bridgeport, and playing well at Bridgeport, then it poured down the rain and that game got cancelled. We sat around there for three or four hours then we came home. Then we got back on the bus today and went over to Lincoln. Its tough to focus back up and get ready to play. Defensively, it wasn’t bad. We did have a couple errors this afternoon. That hurt. They just came out more focused than we did and won the game. It’s a tough section.”

David Gainer took over pitching duties for Elkins when the game resumed on Friday. He recorded the loss, giving up 6 runs on 5 hits in 1 inning pitched. Jesse Williams took over in the sixth inning and closed out the game for EHS. He gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and stuck out 2 batters. Adam Riggleman started the game on March 30. In 4 innings of work, he struck out 4 batters and gave up 3 runs on 2 hits.

Joseph Schmidlen set the pace at the plate for Elkins. He went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI. Luke Petrice also played well, going 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 walks. Blake Loftis, Matt Wilson and Gainer each went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Elkins (13-3) is set to challenge Highland High School, Pa., in an exhibition game at PNC Park today at 2:30 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
