Tigers win on Senior Night
ELKINS — David Gainer drove in 4 runs Friday, as Class AA No. 4 ranked Elkins downed Big 10 Conference rival Lewis County, 8-3, on Senior Night for the Tigers.
“The guys played pretty well,” EHS coach Jack Crumm said. “It was Senior Night, so all the seniors and their parents came down on the field to be recognized. It was a real nice, they had dinner afterward.
“The boys stayed focused, for a Senior Night. Typically, we lose a lot of focus on Senior Night and we don’t play as well as we normally do. We pitched pretty well and played pretty good defense. It was just a really nice night all together.”
Adam Riggleman earned the victory on the mound. In 3 innings of work, he gave up 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 4 batters. David Gainer took over in the fourth and pitched 2 innings, recording 4 strikeouts while giving up 2 runs on 3 hits.
Matthew Gainer closed out the contest, tossing 2 innings and striking out 2 batters.
David Gainer set the pace at the plate for EHS, going 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and a run scored. Matt Wilson finished the day 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored, and Kyle Riggleman went 2 for 4. Russell Shiflett also played well, going 1 for 1 at the plate.
Jakob Gragg shouldered the loss for the Minutemen. He threw 3 1/3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks.
Elkins (12-2) is set to host Buckhannon-Upshur on Monday. The junior varsity game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and the varsity contest will begin at 7 p.m.
