TVHS shuts out two teams

Tygarts Valley junior Austin Lanham connects with a Petersburg pitch Wednesday afternoon.

MILL CREEK — The Tygarts Valley Bulldogs earned a pair of victories Wednesday, downing Pocahontas County, 13-0, in an afternoon contest and later, Petersburg, 6-0, in a night cap.

“It was nice to get back on the field,” TVHS coach James Markley said. “We haven’t played since last Wednesday, but we’ve still been putting in the work and it showed. Our bats came alive early and Logan George pitched a really good game. We also played well on defense.”

Logan George tossed a no-hitter against Pocahontas County to earn the victory in the first game. He went 5 innings and struck out 7 batters.

At the plate, Marcus Reynolds set the tone for TVHS. He went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Other notable performances included: Austin Lanham, 1 for 1 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs; Caleb Riggleman, 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored; Rece Wamsley, 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI; Brett Smith, 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI; Garrett Swecker, 1 for 1 with 1 run and 2 RBIs; and Hunter Lanham, 1 for 1 with 2 runs scored.

In the second game, Smith earned the victory on the mound against Petersburg. He went 5 2/3 innings, striking out 6 batters and giving up 3 hits. Riggleman pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and stuck out 3 batters.

Reynolds came up big again at the plate, this time going 2 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI. Riggleman finished the game 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, while Hunter Lanham went 1 for 2 with a run scored and Austin Simmons went 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI.

“Pitching and defense again was our strong point,” Markley said of the second victory. “We had a big second inning with the bats. It was a good team win.”

Tygarts Valley (11-5) is set to travel to Pendleton County on Saturday for a doubleheader. The first game is set for 1:30 p.m. and the second game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
