Yellow Jackets sting Bulldogs twice
MOOREFIELD — The Moorefield Yellow Jackets collected their eighth straight victory Thursday, sweeping Tygarts Valley in a doubleheader.
Moorefield won the first game, 4-0, and the second contest, 6-0.
“We played two pretty good ball games, we just couldn’t get a hit with runners in scoring position,” TVHS coach James Markley said. “I thought our pitchers did a good job. Moorefield played well. They didn’t make mistakes and scored a few runs with two outs. Their pitchers stayed ahead in the count and we hit the ball right at them. We just needed a couple of breaks, and couldn’t seem to come up with them.”
In the first game, Moorefield went up 2-0 in the second inning and the Bulldogs didn’t recover. The Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Blake Watts claimed the victory for Moorefield. He struck out 5 batters in 6 innings of work, while giving up 4 hits.
Rece Wamsley took the loss for TVHS. He went the distance, surrendering 4 runs on 8 hits and striking out 6 batters.
Sloan Williams set the pace at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and 3 RBIs. Seth Hoyt also played well, going 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored
For the Bulldogs, Caleb Riggleman went 2 for 3 with a stolen base and Brett Smith went 1 for 2.
In the second game, Moorefield scored 1 run in both the first and third innings. MHS then exploded for 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to singles by Williams and Hoyt.
Hoyt also earned the victory on the mound. In 7 innings of work, he allowed 5 hits and struck out 5 batters.
Brett Smith recorded the loss for TVHS. He tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs, 7 hits, striking out 5 and walking 1.
Marcus Reynolds, Austin Lanham, Ethan Lanham, Wamsley and Riggleman tallied 1 hit each in the contest.
Again, Williams and Hoyt did most of the damage at the plate for Moorefield. Williams went 2 for 4 with a run and 2 RBIs, while Hoyt went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Garett Haggerty, Westly Martinez-Toros, Rion Landes and Blake Conrad had 1 hit each for the Yellow Jackets.
TVHS (7-5) will travel to Doddridge County on Monday for a 5 p.m. contest.
