Bulldogs prepare for state tourney

BRIDGEPORT — Caleb Riggleman drove in 2 runs in the top of the ninth inning Monday to help Class A No. 4 ranked Tygarts Valley defeat Class AA No. 1 ranked Bridgeport, 4-2, in the final tune-up game before the state baseball tournament gets underway later this week in Charleston.

“We were just glad to be able to play a tune-up game,” TVHS coach James Markley said. “We threw several different guys on the mound and got some good quality at bats.

“We are excited to get to play Thursday, but we know we still have work to do to prepare for Ravenswood. That’s why it’s nice to get a game in today with Bridgeport,” Markley added.

Garrett Swecker earned the victory on the mound for the Bulldogs. He went 1 2/3 innings, giving up zero runs on 1 hit. Rece Wamsley started the contest for TVHS.

He went 1 inning and surrendered 1 hit while striking out 1 batter. Brett Smith and Hunter Lanham also put in work on the mound during the game.

Lanham set the pace at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 1 run scored. Riggleman finished the game 2 for 4 with a double, 2 RBIs, 1 run scored and 1 walk, while Marcus Reynolds, Logan George, Garrett Swecker and Smith garnered 1 hit each.

TVHS took an early 2-0 lead, scoring runs in both the second and third innings. Bridgeport rallied in the seventh inning to score 2 runs and force extra

innings.

Riggleman then connected on a single in the top of the ninth inning to push Reynolds and Swecker across the plate to take a 4-2 lead. The Bulldogs defense then held on for the victory in the bottom half of the stanza.

No. 4 seed Tygarts Valley (20-8) is set to take on No. 1 seed Ravenswood on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park in the first round of the Class A WVSSAC State Baseball Tournament.
